How to prepare and pack a package for international shipping
Ensure that your products or belongings reach their global destination in perfect condition with this step-by-step guide on international packaging and logistics.
Sending a package internationally involves long distances, multiple handlers, temperature variations, and customs inspections. To avoid damage, delays, or extra costs, it is essential that the packaging is sturdy, secure, and compliant with international regulations.
Required materials before starting
- Corrugated cardboard box: Preferably new and double-walled for heavy shipments.
- Cushioning material: Bubble wrap, foam, packing peanuts, or dense Kraft paper.
- Heavy-duty packing tape: Polypropylene or PVC adhesive tape (at least 5 cm wide). Avoid paper or masking tape.
- Waterproof plastic bag or transparent pouch: To protect documentation against unexpected weather conditions.
Step-by-step to pack your international shipment
Select the appropriate box
Use a box that matches the size and weight of the contents. If using a reused box, ensure it has no cracks or deformations, and completely remove or cover all barcodes and previous shipping labels.
Protect and wrap each item individually
Cover each item separately with several layers of bubble wrap. If you are shipping fragile items (glassware, electronics, liquids), add extra protection around the edges and corners.
Apply the cushioning technique ("Nesting" Effect)
Place at least 5 cm of filling material at the bottom of the box. Arrange the items leaving space between them and the outer walls. Fill empty gaps so that nothing moves when shaking the package.
Seal the box using the "H-taping" method
Close the box by applying tape along the center seam as well as both side edges (forming an "H" shape). Repeat the same sealing method on the bottom base of the package.
Attention to customs documentation!
International shipments require a customs declaration, commercial invoice, and sometimes certificates of origin. Print the documentation and insert it inside a transparent self-adhesive plastic pouch firmly attached to the outside of the package.
Correct labeling and clear instructions
Make sure to place the shipping label on the top, most visible face of the box. Always include sender and recipient addresses in a clear format, with international contact numbers (including the country code). If applicable, place clear "Fragile" or "This Side Up" labels.
Ready to ship?
Proper packaging not only reduces the risk of damage, but also speeds up customs clearance and avoids unnecessary delays in the destination country.
